Samsung Galaxy S4 loses to Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 in drop tests

Extended warranty specialist SquareTrade has suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is not as robust as its Gorilla Glass-protected screen and polycarbonate body would suggest - rating it lower in drop survivability than the last-generation Galaxy S3 or rival iPhone 5.

Subjecting all three devices to a barrage of durability tests shared on YouTube, the company found that the Galaxy S4 failed before any of the rival devices - including Samsung's own previous-generation Galaxy S3 handset. While the S4 was found to be slightly more waterproof than its predecessor, the drop testing didn't go so well for Samsung's latest flagship.

"Major strikes against the S4 include high breakability during SquareTrade drop tests, a slippery back panel, and a wider screen that reduces grip-ability, especially compared to the ultra-slim iPhone 5," the company stated following its testing. "Our research and experience shows that even the smallest device characteristics can dramatically affect its breakability: the weight balance of a device can affect the way it spins in free-fall, making it more likely to land on its screen; devices with rubber backs are less likely to slide, and device dimensions can effect how snugly smartphones fit in pant and jeans pockets. The likelihood of damage due to these common scenarios has never been higher."

The company's results may come as a surprise to iPhone owners: Samsung fans have long decried Apple's decision to include a glass back on the handset, doubling the likelihood that something will shatter when the handset is dropped. Samsung's handsets, by contrast, use a casing constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate plastic - a material which is supposed to deform on impact and reduce the shock to the rest of the handset.

Whatever changes in the Galaxy S4 design have caused its drop survivability to lessen compared to previous-generation hardware, it's something Samsung will doubtless be keen to address in future revisions of the hardware: the company is already rumoured to be looking into moving to a metal unibody chassis for its Galaxy Note 3, despite having defended its use of plastics in the past.

Samsung has not yet provided comment on the results of SquareTrade's testing.

Obama administration simplifies health care form

(AP) ? The first draft was as mind-numbing and complex as tax forms. Now the Obama administration is unveiling a simplified application for health insurance benefits under the federal health care overhaul.

Details to be released Tuesday include a three-page short form that single people can fill out, administration officials said. Medicare chief Marilyn Tavenner, also overseeing the rollout of the health care law, called it "significantly shorter than industry standards."

The earlier draft of the application was widely panned, and administration allies feared uninsured people would give up in frustration. Administration officials say they have trimmed the paperwork burden back considerably.

One activist briefed on the changes said Monday the administration has made big improvements. Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, said the new application will be easier to navigate and much less intimidating.

Although the new forms may be shorter, it's unclear whether the administration can get rid of all the complexity. That's because applicants will have to provide detailed snapshots of their incomes to see whether they qualify for government assistance. Individuals will have to gather tax returns, pay stubs and other financial records before filling out the application.

Nearly 30 million uninsured Americans are eventually expected to get coverage through President Barack Obama's health care law. Enrollment starts Oct. 1 for coverage that takes effect Jan. 1. Middle-class people who don't get coverage through their jobs will be able to purchase private insurance, in most cases with the help of tax credits to make premiums more affordable. Low-income uninsured people will be steered to government programs like Medicaid.

Administration officials expect most consumers to apply online through new health insurance marketplaces that will be operating in each state. A single application form will serve to route consumers to either private plans or the Medicaid program. Identification, citizenship and immigration status, as well as income details, are supposed to be verified in close to real time through a federal "data hub" that will involve pinging Social Security, Homeland Security and the Internal Revenue Service.

Currently, applying for health insurance individually entails filling out a lengthy questionnaire about your health. Under Obama's overhaul, insurers will no longer be able to turn away the sick, or charge them more. The health care questions will disappear, but they'll be replaced by questions about your income. Consumers who underestimate their incomes could be in for an unwelcome surprise later on in the form of smaller tax refunds.

HeartWare loss smaller than expected; shares rise

By Pallavi Ail

(Reuters) - Medical device maker HeartWare International Inc reported a smaller-than-expected first-quarter loss after sales of its heart pump soared 62 percent, sending its shares up 8 percent in after-market trading.

During the quarter, the company sold 482 of its flagship HVAD pumps, which won approval from U.S. health regulators in November.

HeartWare shares dipped during the company's post-earnings call with analysts after it said an investigation into a patient's death, which was reported by U.S. health regulators in late-March, showed that there may have been one more such incident related to the HVAD device. (http://r.reuters.com/jef77t)

"We suspect that most likely cause of the event is an electrostatic discharge during battery replacement (which) could have caused the software to function improperly," Chief Executive Doug Godshall said.

Godshall said the second incident may have happened previously although it would be difficult to prove "definitively".

"We note that both patients had uncommon underlying medical conditions that greatly increased the risk of mortality in event of any disruption in pump performance."

Godshall said the company plans to update the instructions in the patient manual so as to specifically warn about the electrostatic issue.

The company's net loss narrowed to $12.9 million, or 87 cents per share, in the quarter ended March 31, from $18.8 million, or $1.33 per share, a year earlier.

Net revenue jumped 87 percent to $49.2 million.

Analysts had expected a loss of $1.20 per share on revenue of $39.7 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

HeartWare shares were up at $91.60 in extended trading after closing at $85.42 on the Nasdaq on Monday.

Boston bomb suspect in small cell with steel door

AYER, Mass. (AP) ? The Boston Marathon bombing suspect is being held in a small cell with a steel door at a federal medical detention center about 40 miles outside the city, a federal official said Saturday.

Federal Medical Center Devens spokesman John Collauti described the conditions under which 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was being held in the Ayer facility after being moved there from a hospital Friday.

Tsarnaev was injured during a police chase Thursday in which his brother, also a suspect in the bombing, was fatally wounded.

Collauti said in a telephone interview that Tsarnaev is in secure housing where authorities can monitor him. His cell has a solid steel door with an observation window and a slot for passing food and medication.

Collauti wouldn't discuss specific details related to Tsarnaev, but said that typically medical workers making rounds each shift monitor the inmates. He said guards also keep an eye on some cells with video cameras.

Also, inmates in the more restrictive section do not have access to TVs or radios, but can read books and other materials, he said.

"Really this type of facility is fully capable of handling him and it's not that much of an inconvenience because it's more or less business as usual," Collauti said.

Tsarnaev's mother said the bombing allegations against her son are lies.

Draft was light on glamour, heavy on intrigue

Minnesota went all in with three first-round picks.

Super Bowl champion Baltimore went for replacements for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

The New York Jets added to their quarterback uncertainty by taking Geno Smith in the second round.

Teams loaded up on linemen, making the big and beefy guys this year's stars.

The 2013 NFL draft was light on glamour at the skill positions, but heavy on intrigue (when would Manti Te'o go?) and burly bodies able to either get after or protect all those pricey passers.

Denver Broncos boss John Elway called the draft "deep in the trenches.

"It wasn't sexy, but there were a lot of good football players in this draft, he said. "It was deep in the other-than-glitzy positions."

The first round included 18 linemen, one quarterback and, for the first time since 1963, no running backs.

"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," said No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle from Central Michigan taken by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here's a breakdown:

VALIANT VIKINGS

Nobody made more noise in this year's draft than the Vikings.

Coming of a surprising run to the playoffs spearheaded by MVP Adrian Peterson, they became the first team since the Rams in 2001 to have three first-round picks. They traded four selections to New England to move up and take Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson after grabbing Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

That's pushing all your chips into the center of the table.

"I don't think it could've worked out any better for the caliber of players we got coming into our program," Vikings GM Rick Spielman said after addressing three of his four major needs in a dizzying 30-minute span. "I'm very excited."

When the Vikings finally got back on the clock Saturday, Spielman addressed his other big need by grabbing Penn State linebackers Gerald Hodges in the fourth round and Michael Mauti in the seventh.

With that, Minnesota served notice that they're coming after Aaron Rodgers and everyone else in 2013.

QB CONUNDRUM

The Jets are testing out the old saying you can never have too many quarterbacks.

After Buffalo surprised nearly everyone by picking Florida State's EJ Manuel as the only QB in the first round (at No. 16), the Jets pulled off their own stunner by selecting West Virginia's Geno Smith in the second round, at No. 39.

Coach Rex Ryan's three-ring circus at QB now includes a half dozen passers. The others are Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.

"I hope they're all thinking, 'Hey, I have an opportunity to go win a job,'" Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Smith certainly is.

"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback," he said. "But as of now, there's lots of work to be done."

Smith put up great numbers in college but also had accuracy issues and fumbled the ball an alarming 32 times, and scouts also questioned his overall skills and leadership in some pre-draft reports.

"You know what," Smith said, "critics don't have a pick."

SUPER SELECTIONS

Will the Harbaugh brothers be making plans for another family reunion in February? Both Baltimore and San Francisco restocked for another Super Bowl run.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome launched a defensive makeover after Lewis retired and Reed led a free agency exodus following their title, signing with Houston. Newsome used his first four picks and six of 10 selections on defenders, beginning with safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown, who have some huge cleats to fill.

San Francisco's 11-player haul included defensive back Eric Reid, defensive end Tank Carradine and tight end Vance McDonald, but the most intriguing pick was that of fourth-rounder Marcus Lattimore. The South Carolina running back suffered a career-threatening right knee injury last season just one year after tearing ligaments in his left knee.

San Francisco took a similar gamble several years ago when it spent a third-round selection on Frank Gore, who had suffered torn ligaments in each of his knees a year apart at the University of Miami, but has made the Pro Bowl four times and is the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

"I love the aggressive mental approach he has taken through this whole process, but we're going to slow down the aggressive physical things and make sure Marcus is 100 percent healthy before he goes out there on the field," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "If he doesn't play this year, then he doesn't play this year."

REMAKING ROSTERS

The heavy turnover after last season ? eight new coaches and seven new general managers ? meant there were plenty of newbies making draft decisions.

Led by the Chiefs new brain trust of coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey, eight of the top 11 picks were made by teams that had turnover at the decision-making positions as the Jaguars, Eagles, Browns, Cardinals, Bills, Jets and Chargers also had a first-year coach and/or general manager.

Of those, the biggest splash was made by the Bills when GM Buddy Nix gave new coach Doug Marrone a new QB by trading out of the eighth spot and selecting Florida State's Manuel.

"If we can develop this guy, he has the talent to take you to the dance," Nix said.

Other than the decision to take a chance on Manti Te'o in the second round, the Chargers rookie tandem of GM Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy added right tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama with the 11th pick and Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the third round, two players who should help embattled QB Philip Rivers right away.

BUSTS OR BRONZE

For all the money and hours spent watching tape and workouts, evaluating players' bodies and minds, recording height, weight, speed and strength, the draft remains an inexact science. There will be first-round busts like always and maybe some undrafted guys end up with bronze busts in Canton, Ohio.

"You never really know because you're dealing with humans," Elway said.

The Broncos have had at least one college free agent make the 53-man roster coming out of camp every year since 2004, but it's going to be hard for any of Denver's 15 undrafted additions to make it this year after Denver loaded up in free agency and the draft after a 13-3 season.

Elway wasn't called on to close the sale on any of the free agent candidates. He learned his lesson when he bought his first car dealership many years ago and a salesman called him in to seal the deal.

"So I go in and the guy says, 'You've got a lot more money than I do. Why would I want to pay you $1,000?" Elway recounted. "I said, 'OK, you can have it for $500.'

"So, ever since then, I've stayed out of the negotiating business."

Movie Review: ?Trance? ? You're Getting Sleepy, Sleepy | njtoday ...

2 & ? popcorns

Find tickets and showtimes on Fandango.

trance_posterBy Michael S. Goldberger,?film critic

You know that dream you have?the one you think you?ve had several times before, but when you awake can?t recall the recurrence? Well, if you can explain what that?s all about, you?ll have no trouble following director Danny Boyle?s quasi-linear ?Trance,? about a psychologist?s attempt to help some art thieves find a misplaced masterpiece.

Formed of numerous story striations, seemingly plopped together to confuse, the film?s elusive nature does work to draw our interest, but in the final analysis, not all that honestly. Although there are several good ideas and well crafted threads of mystery, Mr. Boyle plays dirty pool in that he never really sprinkles enough crumbs for us to track.

Then, in the last twenty or so minutes, emulating a classic British style of plot resolution that dovetails to the climax, he unravels what cogent details were heretofore denied us. To which I decry, Poppycock! You made me watch all that, thinking I might figure out what the heck was going on, when all long you were pocketing the key information.

Serving as somewhat of a saving grace, Rosario Dawson as the therapist/hypnotist supplies a compelling, take charge sexiness to the doings, as well as an interesting antithesis to the rough-edged brigands who engage her services. Supposedly drawn randomly from the phone listings, there?s the first so-called clue to mull. It gets thick.

Oh, it starts simply enough. Simon, credibly portrayed by James McAvoy, is a mild-mannered art auctioneer. Because of a weakness to be divulged at a later interstice, he falls in with a bad bunch and agrees to help them heist Francisco Goya?s ?Witches in the Air.? But things go amiss, and in the upshot Simon gets severely bopped on the head.

It?s bad enough for the young man that he?s sustained an injury. That he can?t remember where he hid the purloined treasure puts him in deep Dutch with his iniquitous new pals. Everyone knows amnesia is rubbish, exclaims Franck, the determined head honcho, played with a dangerous edge by Vincent Cassel. All the same, he wants the painting.

So welcome to Dr. Elizabeth Lamb?s couch, where via Miss Dawson?s fine performance, we?re convinced she?s worked wonders curing addictions of every sort through her estimable powers of hypnotic suggestion. Simon becomes a regular. But wait a minute ?they start to get involved. We didn?t figure on this, and that?s just the first bombshell.

Matters and ideas intermesh as the doc probes into Simon?s psyche, divulging either fact or fantasy, spewed in no chronological order that we can fathom. It can get miffing. But while director Boyle exhibits neither the devilish insight of a Poe nor the clever irony of an O. Henry, he furnishes just enough curiosity to keep us from quitting on him.

Chief among these gauzy compellers is the deja vu feeling we glimpse in Dr. Lamb?s eyes as she delves deep into the story?s suppositions, a journey made even more complicated to us by filmmaker Boyle?s Lazy Susan-style of narrative. To and fro through the film?s time continuum he scatters bits of story for us to eagerly lunge at.

But, just in case that sort of exposition isn?t challenge enough, especially for those filmgoers who like a good go at Rubik?s Cube each morn with their Eggs Benedict, the proverbial mystery wrapped in an enigma is at times mixed with chimera. Yep, just when you think you have a handle on it, a character wakes up startled. It was just a dream.

Or was it? Maybe dreams are, after all, a window to the past, the future, our true feelings and gosh knows what else. It?s a convenient, hopeful idea, and one of the subtly implied conjectures that serve among the movie?s many attempts to be profound whilst otherwise playing fast and loose with our indulgence. Of course doubters will get antsy.

Still, for those who just haven?t been able to shake that penchant for amateur psychology honed in late night dorm chats during their sophomore year at college, there is much gristle to chaw. A perfect pastime for egomaniacs, I for one floated off to an epiphany about my relationship with Mom. Eureka! I think my reviews will be much better now.

In other words, there?s too much of the emperor?s new clothes in this movie?s wardrobe. I?m willing to take the ride in any funhouse, as long as the surprises within are worth the buildup. Granted, there are some unexpected turns and a few thought provoking notions. However, I?d have to be hypnotized to give ?Trance? any more than 2 & ? popcorns.

?

?Trance,? rated R, is a Fox Searchlight Pictures release directed by Danny Boyle and stars James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. Running time: 101 minutes

UK terror plot leader jailed for minimum 18 years

LONDON (AP) ? The ringleader of an al-Qaida-inspired plot to detonate knapsack bombs in England was sentenced Friday to at least 18 years in jail.

Judge Richard Henriques said 31-year-old Irfan Naseer was "the leader, driving force and man in charge" of the elaborate plot, sentencing him to life with no possibility of parole for 18 years.

"Your plot had the blessing of al-Qaida and you intended to further the aims of al-Qaida," Henriques told Naseer in London as he sentenced the man nicknamed Big Irfan, or Chubbs, along with 10 accomplices. "Clearly nothing was going to stop you, short of intervention of the authorities."

Prosecutors had said the men, fired up by the sermons of U.S.-born al-Qaida preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, hoped to cause carnage on a mass scale. One of Naseer's accomplices was recorded calling the planned attack "another 9/11."

Police said the terrorist conspiracy was the most significant uncovered in Britain since a plot to blow up airliners in midair was foiled in 2006.

But the plot was undone by problems with money and logistics. No targets had been chosen and no bombs built when Naseer, Ashik Ali and Irfan Khalid, both now 28, were arrested in September 2011 in Birmingham, central England, after a huge investigation and surveillance operation by police and the security service.

Prosecutors said Naseer and Khalid had traveled to Pakistan for terror training, where they learned details of poisons, bomb-making and weaponry, and made "martyrdom videos" justifying their planned attacks.

On their return to England in July 2011, they began to recruit others to the plot and to raise money by posing as street collectors for Muslim charities. They also began experimenting with chemicals, the prosecution said, aided by Naseer's university degree in pharmacy.

But many of the group's plans soon went awry. Four other young men dispatched by the plotters to Pakistan for terrorist training were sent home within days when the family of one man found out. The four pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offenses.

Rahin Ahmed, an alleged co-conspirator described in court as the cell's "chief financier," tried to increase the group's budget by trading the money it made from bogus charity fundraising on the financial markets. Instead, he lost the bulk of the terror cell's money.

Among the pieces of evidence at the four-month trial was a sports injury cool pack, which prosecutors said Naseer had mistakenly believed would contain ammonium nitrate, a key bomb-making ingredient.

The group also considered other outlandish attacks, including tying sharp blades to the front of a truck and driving it into a crowd. Naseer was heard talking about the possibility of mixing poison into creams such as Vaseline or Nivea and smearing them on car handles to cause mass deaths.

Prosecutors said the men ultimately gravitated toward a plan to detonate up to eight knapsack bombs ? either on timers or in suicide attacks ? in a bid to cause destruction on a scale larger than the July 7, 2005, London transit bombings, which killed 52 commuters.

Naseer was recorded plotting about knapsack bombs going "boom, boom, boom everywhere," while Khalid said the attack would be "revenge for everything, what we're doing is another 9/11."

The trio was convicted in February of plotting terrorist attacks and sentenced Friday at Woolwich Crown Court, with Khalid getting a minimum of 12 years in prison and Ali a minimum of 10 years.

Eight others who had pleaded guilty to involvement also were sentenced.

Microsoft Quietly Shuts Down Bing Deals, Launches Bing Offers As A Replacement

2013-04-25_1015The daily deals hype around Groupon, LivingSocial and all of their clones has markedly cooled down over the last few months, but that isn’t stopping Microsoft from launching Bing Offers, a new local deals aggregator for the U.S. market, today. The odd thing about this launch is that Bing previously?offered a very similar feature called Bing Deals since 2011 – a service that now seems to be gone. As a Microsoft spokesperson told me, Bing Deals went through “a number of iterations” over the years, and Bing Offers is essentially the next version of Bing Deals. As far as I can see, Bing Deals’ emphasis was on aggregating the best deals from across the web. Bing Offers puts its focus more on local deals, but it also features a number of national offers, as well. Bing Offers, the company says, will aggregate deals from “a broad set of partners, including many of the leading local deal providers.” Microsoft hasn’t made a full list of partners available, but I’m seeing offers from LivingSocial, Groupon (via Yipit), Spotted Fox, DoubleTakeDeals?and a number of other smaller providers. The service features the same kind of flat design that’s now the hallmark of most of Microsoft’s products and as a daily deals aggregator, it’s actually quite nice. You can browse offers by categories (food, activities, health and fitness, etc.) and, as Microsoft stresses, “the Bing Offers experience works seamlessly across tablets, mobile devices, and PCs, so you can access great deals regardless of where you are.”

Discovery, TLC apps for iPad add 'Plus' second screen experience

While Discovery and TLC have offered some show-specific second screen content before, the latest updates to their apps put a new spin on it. Referred to as Discovery Plus and TLC Plus, the new features are currently iPad-only (coming soon to iPhone), bringing behind the scenes info, photos, quizzes and more for shows on the networks, ready to audio sync with live broadcasts or DVR viewing. Other changes in version 2.5 of the apps include new schedule info that lets you know when new episodes are airing for a show, and what's next up to premiere. We're still not sure if this approach to the second screen is enough to consistently make viewers remember to grab their mobile device while watching, but you can try it out during an episode of Dual Survival and let us know how it goes.
