Climate Change Dispatch - Was Sandy systematically caused by ...

satelliteimageAnthony Watts wrote down a nice table describing which folks believe or at least pretend to believe that CO2 "caused" Hurricane Sandy and which people don't. If I simplify it a little bit, activists, liars, and crackpots such as Al Gore support the link while scientists don't. I am kind of pleased to see that for the first time, most of the media seem to agree that the people promoting the hurricane-CO2 link are hacks.

I was intrigued by a member of the former group, hardcore leftist activist Mr George Lakoff, who wrote the following text for the Huffington Post:

Global Warming Systemically Caused Hurricane Sandy

He introduces a new problematic term: "systematic causation". He believes that fossil fuels "systemically caused" Hurricane Sandy (and other weather events we don't like). The description makes it look like the construct "A systemically caused B" means "A increased the odds of B" ? note that my alternative wording is equally long, much more accurate, and not requiring any new contrived phrases.

Except that Mr Lakoff believes that AIDS is only "systemically caused", not "directly caused", by the HIV virus. That's pretty interesting. Either he is an HIV denier or his definition of "systemic causation" is internally inconsistent. But let's ask two questions: Was Sandy "systemically caused" by CO2 emissions? And forgetting about the answer and focusing on genuine "systemic causes" of bad events in general, is it legitimate for the society to outlaw them?

My answer to both questions is No, although the latter question deserves a subtler discussion.

Unless you believe in astrology and similar things, you will surely agree that it's not in the power of CO2 or any other indirect hypothetical causes to adjust some "highly internal" and "seemingly random" characteristics of tropical storms such as the population of the city that the storms target. ;-)

So the fact that Sandy managed to flood some tunnels in the New York subway system, among dozens of related achievements, is pretty clearly a coincidence that can't be explained by any well-defined long-term "cause", not even a "systemic cause". Most hurricanes avoid New York, some hurricanes get there, and only the proportion may be measured or theoretically calculated. In other words, when we talk about unknown future hurricanes, we may only predict their ability to target New York or other great cities probabilistically. And we may only estimate the probability that the most important hurricane of 2013 will make landing at most 4 days before the Halloween.

(The same comment, "only probabilistic predictions are possible", obviously applies to earthquakes in Italy, too.)

Needless to say, exactly the same words apply to Katrina and New Orleans in 2005. Katrina was a big story ? much bigger than Sandy (surely by the number of casualties) ? because it hit a large and relatively vulnerable city of New Orleans. Sandy was a relatively big story because it affected the "greatest city in the world" although not as much as Katrina did harm New Orleans. Let's agree that the targeting is a matter of chance.

But if you subtract all the "special characteristics" of Sandy that are related to its random path, there is almost nothing left. In fact, by the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), Sandy isn't even the largest storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. It's not even the second one. It's not even the third one: Sandy is just the fourth largest Atlantic tropical storm of 2012. That shouldn't be shocking because it has made it to the Category 2 and only marginally and for a short time.

One may look for various detailed properties of Sandy ? its trajectory, its area, its pre-Halloween timing, and so on. But I think it's clear that trying to attribute some "message" (I would say "divine message") to any of these detailed properties is a sign of medieval superstitions. People who try to interpret these properties as divine signals may use a quasi-scientific vocabulary but the vocabulary isn't the essence. The essence is the logic behind their thoughts and beliefs and it is equally unscientific as any other generic medieval superstitions.

The fact that Sandy went to New Jersey is a coincidence ? one that could be predicted a few days in advance but one that has no implications for any knowledge or mechanisms that are relevant outside the end of October 2012. The fact that Sandy hit before the Halloween or before the U.S. presidential election is another coincidence. It's totally scientifically implausible to assign "causes" or "systemic causes" to such microscopic accidental characteristics of a tropical storm. Such links are equivalent to astrology and other superstitions. There isn't any conceivable natural mechanism that could impose such causal links ? and there's even no conceivable mechanism or explanation that could significantly increase the chance that a hurricane is more Sandy-like if the CO2 concentration is higher. I am convinced that everyone who has been given basic scientific education ? or who has a basic scientific intuition even in the absence of any formal education ? must know that.

So we are back to the usual questions whether the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may be increasing or decreasing the number or hurricanes or their average or maximum intensity. I think that the data speak a clear language: no such dependence, whether positive or negative, may be extracted from the data that seem to be fully explainable by "noise", essentially "white noise". In the future, the datasets will become more extensive and perhaps more accurate and people may see a signal we don't see today. That's why it makes sense to ask whether we may predict what they will see. I think (based on arguments I have been repeatedly explained by Richard Lindzen in particular) that if they will ever see such an impact, it should be a negative impact ? fewer hurricanes or weaker hurricanes. It's because storminess and other activity is driven by temperature (and other) gradients and in a hypothetical warmer world, the equator-pole temperature difference should be smaller because the poles should warm up faster. The gradients should decrease and because the gradients power the cyclone activity (and other things, including temperature variations in general), the cyclone activity should go down.

That's my prediction but I don't know how strong the effect is. It's probably very weak and it may remain invisible for centuries and perhaps forever because "global warming caused by CO2" will most likely never have an observable effect that would go beyond a modest shift of the global mean temperature.

Even when you look at the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season which became another heavily overhyped one, you will see that the Accumulated Cyclone Energy is just 121 so far, just marginally higher than the historical average around 105. The ACEs for individual seasons are never constant. They belong to some statistical distribution. It's inevitable that sometimes, the ACE ends up being above the average, sometimes (in many years after 2005), it ends up being below the average. There's nothing shocking about either outcome: it's a law of physics that such things are not constant although left-wing, egalitarian activists often have a problem with this totally basic concept underlying all of science.

Video: Hurricane Sandy hits 105 mph, heads north

>>> storm. good morning to you.

>> good morning, savannah, and here's a storm , a powerful storm , a category 2 , dangerous storm 440 miles southeast of miami, florida . 105-mile-per-hour winds, picking up speed moving north at 18 miles per hour. you can alrdy see rain bands making their way into southern florida . here's what we have watches and warnings wise, we are expecting to see hurricane warnings right now throughout -- just about the entire bahamas and eastern cuba. we also have tropical storm warnings now up for a good portion of the eastern florida coast from key largo up to daytona beach with tropical storm watches back through the keys and up past north of daytona beach . the path of the storm , here's what we look for right now. basically staying a category 2 storm . but once it comes off of the cuba area, where it's gotten torn apart a little bit by the mountain there, it becomes a category 1 storm . saturday paralleling the southeastern coast. in the meantime causing big problems for the southern and eastern florida coast. now, here's where the computer models differ. and this is what we are concerned abt. in yellow, the american computer model keeps it off the coast and eventually hooks it into new england. the european model which historically is the more accurate of the two long-range by sunday keeps it close to the east coast and then early on monday, brings it into the delmarva peninsula south of new jersey, which would be horrible for the northeast. because that brings the strongest quadrant of the storm , the northeastern quadrant along this megaopolis. we have to keep an eye on this because as we move into the weekend, the entire eastern sea board is in play and we'll continue to track it.

Today?s Nintendo Direct broadcast has shed some light on some additional details for the Wii U and 3DS versions of Monster Hunter Tri, named Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

The Monster Hunter franchise is definitely one of the most successful Capcom productions of the generation with 3 mainline games available on Psp and Wii, an online only spin off called Monster Hunter Frontier online, a fourth mainline game being developed for 3DS and a few Psp spin offs
The series premises are simple yet addicting: as the name suggests, players will become monster hunters, exploring the vast wilderness and fighting gigantic beasts and monsters. What makes the Monster Hunter games so much fun is the way monsters have to be defeated: each monster has a specific weak point players must find out before hoping to have a chance to defeat them. Button mashing won?t get you far in the Monster Hunter games. Each monster has its own weapon and elemental weaknesses too and hunters must be really prepared before each hunt. Once defeated players will collect materials from the dead monster body and use them to make more powerful weapons and armors. Multiplayer mode allows hunters to join together their efforts and it?s definitely one of the series gameplay?s highlights.

The third game of the series, dubbed Monster Hunter Tri, was first released on Nintendo Wii on 2009 to critical and commercial success.
The game was ported last year on 3DS as Monster Hunter Tri G with some added content and general gameplay tweakings.
The Wii U and 3DS versions will be released in the west as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: today?s Nintendo Direct confirmed that the game?s online multiplayer mode will be free.
Four players will be able to join the hunts together; local multiplayer between the Wii U version and the 3DS one was also confermed.
The good news don?t stop here since all post release DLC of the 3DS version will be included in the WII U version.
Hunters will also be able to choose their ?weapons? outside the game as the Wii U version will be compatible with both the Gamepad and the Pro Controller: the Gamepad will offer some advantages in quick access to inventory and in-game maps.

On a related note, Nintendo Europe announced today that they will be taking care of distribution for the European and Australian markets.

Get your weapons ready hunters: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will launch in the West in March 2013.

Novartis sales disappoint as Diovan patent loss bites

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Novartis posted lower-than-expected third quarter sales on Thursday, dragged down by the loss of a U.S. patent on its top-selling blood pressure drug Diovan and lower sales at its Sandoz unit.

Third-quarter net sales fell 2 percent to $13.807 billion, falling short of the average forecast in a Reuters poll of $14.032 billion, while core earnings per share fell 6 percent to $1.34, in line with consensus.

Novartis is facing headwinds from a wave of patent expiries sweeping through the global pharmaceutical industry. Sales of Diovan, which went off patent in the United States on September 21, fell 32 percent in the third quarter to $969 million.

The drugmaker is banking on sales of its newest products, such as multiple sclerosis pill Gilenya and breast cancer drug Afinitor to offset declines in Diovan. Recently launched products accounted for 29 percent of group net sales in the quarter, up from 25 percent a year ago.

Sales at its generics division Sandoz fell 6 percent to $2 billion hit by growing competition for generic enoxaparin, a copycat version of blood thinner Lovenox originally produced by Sanofi.

Lingering manufacturing problems at the Lincoln manufacturing site in Nebraska, which has annualised sales of $1 billion, continued to weigh on the Consumer Health division, where sales fell 16 percent to $938 million.

Novartis has been beset by a raft of manufacturing problems this year. The firm said it was taking longer than originally anticipated to restart commercial production at Lincoln.

On Wednesday, Italy banned the sales and use of four anti-influenza vaccines produced by Novartis pending tests for possible side effects. Novartis said it was confident that two vaccines manufactured in Italy were safe and had seen no safety concerns to date.

Novartis confirmed its outlook for 2012 and said the strong dollar would shave approximately 3-4 percent off full-year sales and 2-3 percent off operating profit. This is a slightly smaller impact than it forecast in the second quarter.

Precisely targeted electrical brain stimulation alters perception of faces

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

In a painless clinical procedure performed on a patient with electrodes temporarily implanted in his brain, Stanford University doctors pinpointed two nerve clusters that are critical for face perception. The findings could have practical value in treating people with prosopagnosia ? the inability to distinguish one face from another ? as well in gaining an understanding of why some of us are so much better than others at recognizing and remembering faces.

In a study to be published Oct. 24 in the Journal of Neuroscience, the scientists showed that mild electrical stimulation of two nerve clusters spaced a half-inch apart in a brain structure called the fusiform gyrus caused the subject's perception of faces to instantly become distorted while leaving his perception of other body parts and inanimate objects unchanged.

The surprised reaction of the subject, Ron Blackwell of Santa Clara, Calif., is captured in a video made during the procedure. "You just turned into somebody else. Your face metamorphosed," he tells the researcher in the video.

Blackwell, who is now 47, was undergoing medical treatment under the direction of Josef Parvizi, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology and neurological sciences at the School of Medicine, whose lab collaborates with that of Kalanit Grill-Spector, PhD, associate professor of psychology at the School of Humanities and Sciences.

The face Blackwell was looking at was Parvizi's. "Ron didn't see my face vaporize or go blank. Instead, it just seemed to warp before his eyes," Parvizi said.

In 2010, Grill-Spector and then-graduate student Kevin Weiner (now a postdoctoral researcher in Grill-Spector's lab and a co-author of the new study) discovered that the fusiform gyrus contains two nerve clusters (designated as pFus and mFus) that respond more strongly to faces than to hands, legs, cars, guitars, flowers or buildings.

Grill-Spector's lab has been studying the fusiform gyrus' role in face recognition as well as in prosopagnosia or "face blindness," a condition made famous by neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, MD, who himself suffers from it. People with prosopagnosia simply cannot distinguish one face from another, although all other aspects of their vision and visual-information processing are normal. Some people, like Sacks, are born with the condition while others acquire it as a result of an injury to the fusiform gyrus, Grill-Spector said.

"We can learn a lot about the function of different brain regions by studying these disorders and relating them to the anatomical sites where brain damage has occurred," she said. "But the injuries vary a great deal from one affected person to the next, and they are typically not confined to the fusiform gyrus. This limits our ability to localize a particular deficit to a particular brain site."

Blackwell's arrival at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, along with a generous slice of serendipity, allowed the Stanford doctors to conduct the first-ever study of the fusiform gyrus combining two imaging techniques (fMRI and electrocorticography, or intracranial recording) and electrical brain stimulation. The result was the first-ever proof that appropriate activity in the two nerve clusters, pFus and mFus, was critical to face recognition.

Blackwell had time on his hands. He was spending a week in a bed at Stanford Hospital with a packet of electrodes snugly abutting a part of his brain that doctors believed might be the initiating site, or focus, of his epileptic seizures. These seizures, which he'd been experiencing since age 11, had been well-controlled by drugs. But by late 2010, his medication was failing.

Blackwell was married and the father of two young girls. "It wasn't just me anymore. I didn't want to be vulnerable to disorienting episodes that could occur at any time of the day or night," he said. Referred by his primary physician to Parvizi, he learned of a medical procedure that might provide relief.

Epileptic seizures are, at root, electrical storms triggered when a short circuit at one small spot within the brain, called the focus, causes waves of electrical activity to spread throughout the organ. (The exact location varies from patient to patient.) Most of the time seizures can be controlled with medication. When they can't, one proven treatment involves a surgical procedure in which a portion of the patient's skull is temporarily removed, allowing access to the surface of the brain near the spot thought to be responsible for initiating the seizures. A packet containing numerous electrode leads is placed near the brain's surface, with each electrode acting like a separate stethoscope monitoring the collective electrical activity of perhaps a half-million nerve cells. (That's a drop in the bucket, considering that a healthy human brain contains 200 billion of them.) The patient remains off medication for several days, eventually culminating in the onset of seizure activity and allowing the neurological team to identify the focus. Surgeons may then be able to excise just enough brain tissue to halt the cycle of self-propagating electrical activity ? in effect, pulling out a fuse in order to break the short circuit ? without affecting any important brain functions.

In September 2011, Blackwell was set to undergo the weeklong monitoring procedure. Based on a thorough neurological workup, electrodes were placed on the surface of a brain region that included the fusiform gyrus, a structure roughly the shape of a hand-rolled cigarette, on the underside of the temporal lobe.

Electrical brain stimulation requires the flow of electricity from one electrode across a small patch of brain tissue to another electrode spaced 1 cm away. It so happens that pFus and mFus, which account for perhaps one-quarter of the fusiform gyrus' bulk, are also 1 cm apart. By fate, two of the inserted electrodes had been positioned almost precisely above the anatomical centers of pFus and mFus in Blackwell's fusiform gyrus, forming a pair that enabled Parvizi to apply the stimulation directly to the two sites simultaneously at the touch of a button.

Doing so instantly altered Blackwell's perception of Parvizi's face. "You almost look like somebody I've seen before, but somebody different," he reported. "... You were someone else. Your whole face just sort of metamorphosed ... it's almost like the shape of your facial features drooped."

When the stimulation was halted, the distorted image of Parvizi's face immediately reverted to the normal one, Blackwell reported. Neither sham stimulation, in which a button was pushed but no actual electrical impulse was delivered to pFus and mFus, nor stimulation of nearby sites via other electrode pairs had any effect on Blackwell's face perception. Stimulating pFus and mFus caused no distortion of other objects in the room, he reported.

Throughout this procedure's duration, Parvizi didn't know what to expect. "I was as surprised as the patient was when he suddenly saw my features seem to melt," Parvizi said.

In a follow-on imaging study of Blackwell's brain using a high-resolution fMRI technique that could discriminate among locations as little as 1.8 mm apart, Grill-Spector and her students confirmed Parvizi's findings. Blackwell's pFus and mFus clusters responded with heightened activity to images of faces, but not to those of hands, feet, flowers, cars, guitars, cars or houses.

The Stanford team of neurologists succeeded in locating the focus of Blackwell's seizures, but decided that removing it would be risky because it was too close to other key parts of the brain. But oddly, since the removal of the electrodes, his medication seems to be working again and his seizures have inexplicably abated to a significant extent, for which he thanks God, he said in a recent interview.

Yeah, I absolutely fucking hate it. When he won the belt in the first place, Goldberg made a HUGE deal about the "first Mexican heavyweight champion" .. like, come the fuck on. No. Mexican culture and Mexican-American culture are worlds apart.

SEO is the best way to establish your business online. If your site is highly ranked by the different search engines, you?ll experience a lot of traffic visiting it every day. Here are a few practical SEO strategies that you can do in order to get a high website ranking.

See if an informational site or .org domain will trade links with you. Your site will receive more favorable treatment when search engines see that your site has received good quality links. Ensure that the quality of your content is high, and you may attract reliable, professional organizations who want to feature a link to your site on their own. Do not fill your site with garbage. Make sure your site has value to others.

Content on your site is an essential part of search engine optimization. Content should be unique, of an appropriate length, well written and focus on a main keyword or phrase. It should also be grammatically correct. Fresh, relevant content is one of the most effective ways to improve your SEO.

Each search engine?s bots constantly look for newly updated content, so posting to yoru blog on a consistent basis gives the bots a reason to stop by. Not only that, if your articles are really good, other people will publish your links. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

Make sure every page on your site has relevant keywords in its title. The title tags have more weight than any other words that appear on the page. Try to use strong keywords to get the best results.

RSS feeds can be a valuable addition to your site when they relate to its content. Their updates are seen by search engines as new additions to your site?s content. If you cannot find an appropriate RSS feed for your site, start your own where you post things related to your site. Make sure you motivate people to follow your RSS feed as well.

Anchor text is essential when you put links on your webpage. You should avoid vague and generic text links like ?click here? because it is not helpful in increasing your search engine ranking. Selecting the optimum keywords to use in anchor text will really get you noticed by the crawling spiders.

To increase your ranking on search engines, it is important to strategically place keywords within your site?s content. Use keywords at the beginning of your text, but avoid stuffing. Place your keyword two time in the introductory paragraph. Incorporate the keyword again in the following 200 words, being certain that you maintain a smooth flow for the reader. The keywords should not stand out.

Site maps make the website easier to navigate and increases the traffic to your different pages. This sitemap page gathers every link on your site, all in one place. Visitors will utilize the links you have created and this will effectively increase traffic to your site.

It is generally accepted that each META description tag should be different for each and every page. If you use identical meta tag text on each of your site?s pages, this will penalize your site by lowering its ranking in search engine results.

Any successful SEO process needs to include the creation of a site map. Spiders can easily decipher you site if you have a site map. The larger the site, the more maps it needs. It?s important to make sure that each map has, at most, 100 links.

Code your site well when trying to use SEO. When search engines see coding that is not well done, they will pass it up. If you rely heavily on Flash content without text descriptions, your site may simply be ignored by the search engines.

Focus as much on keeping people on your site as you do to get them there. This will, in turn, assist in your PageRank numbers. You can find out how much time someone spends on your site with services such as Quantcast scores. Do every thing you can to keep visitors engaged. Discussion mediums such as forums are a good way to interest visitors in spending time on your site.

Even after you implement these suggestions, your work is not done. Search engine optimization is not a one time thing. As a result, you should always try to keep up with the latest news from the search engine optimization industry in order to ensure that your website retains its high ranking.

MBA program in USA international business schools ? managerial ...

hello, I would appreciate the efforts of all members of this forum, I am planning to apply for MBA program in one of USA international business schools, although I have another MBA specialized in marketing from Iran Tehran university too but I want to get this MBA to find a good job in USA after it, and for that I need to submit a SOP. I have read so many SOPs, then I wrote this one for myself, but I need to make it so impressive. I would appreciate it if you could help me out. please feel free to give your suggestion and recommendations.the SOP is here:I hardly believe in the sentence that says "we live once, but if we live right, once is enough", so, I must choose the right decisions about my education and my career, because they are going to live with me throughout my life and they were, are and will be my loyal friends and help me in achieving my goals in life. I have to choose right to never repent in the future. If I want to say two of the most distinguished characteristics of mine I would say I am a very active and intelligent person. I am a young woman with technical aptitude and so much interest in management and I really have passion for understanding different cultures in the world. I strongly believe that all these qualities will influence my graduate work.I think a good education combined with necessary experience equips one with right attitude, freedom and confidence to face the world and its challenges. For this reason, I value education that not only enhance my knowledge and wide my perspective, but also makes me more confident of my capabilities. After finishing high school I took the entrance exam for university (In Iran it is named Konkoor), my score was in the range of best 1% of all participants, I chose to study Insurance management. After I finished my Bachelor degree I started to work with XXX Insurance Company which is the first private and one of the best insurance companies in Iran, I worked as a sale representative for one year. Cooperating with the company in that post gave me a very good experience in selling and team working. One year later I decided to take the general Insurance representative test, which is for choosing general insurance representatives for all Insurance companies, in the test my result got the second place among all and first place among XXX company applicants. Thereupon, I have continued my cooperation with XXX Company as a general Insurance representative or agent.During my working I decided to continue my education in MBA- Marketing specialization which could gave me more knowledge about marketing, selling and leadership. I have done my thesis project research in the concept of fulfilling customer satisfaction through value creation in Insurance companies; the title is "Diagnosing value creation status for all risk insurance customers in XXX Company". The project was very heavy and required great thoughts and efforts, but I have achieved valuable results. After 5 years of experience in team working, selling, training, adjusting selling teams and plans, controlling, leadership and negotiating with customers, now I have came to realized that besides gaining experience in Iran it is important and very useful to be educated and work in a country that is more developed in these field, so, I could gain more confidence in my work and become a more knowledgeable person. To achieve my goals, I need to learn much more about current developments and techniques in management, international markets, market applications and acquire hands-on experience of management. Another Master's degree in Business Administration in XX International Business School in a developed country will provide me with theoretical understanding and depth idea of practical approaches in aiding managerial decision-making and hence research skills which will enable me to develop an expertise in the core areas of management strategies and global corporate marketing options, I would like to probe in specific problem areas such as application of quantitative analysis to understanding various issues in global management and improving decision making and effects of increase in global communications on international management decisions.I am imbued with effective communication skills, critical thinking, and better sense of business management creativity and also have admirable and professional experience in this field. Upon completion of program I would like to join a multinational company, where I can apply past experience and business management knowledge gained through this program. I expect to become an influential contributor to the delicate and finer intricacies involved in successfully executing a product and service launch at global level or a vital business project to the industry. I would like to grow as a strategic business negotiator in the area of international marketing.Ready to enter the global area at this juncture, I want to study MBA in XX International Business School. I promise to put in my best and sincere efforts in meeting the high standards set by the school. I am positive an really looking forward to an exciting stay at your business school.

Asphalt 7: Heat (for Android)

Who said phones can't deliver console-quality gaming? Asphalt 7: Heat ($4.99 direct, though it's on sale for 99 cents) gives you exactly the kind of arcade racing experience you've been hoping for. It's also the nicest-looking game in the series. Asphalt 7: Heat isn't a simulator, but it's definitely a great buy for old-school Ridge Racer and Outrun fans, or anyone who wants a real arcade-style racing game?without excuses.

Pedal to the Pile Carpeting
Asphalt 7: Heat is a 1.37GB download from Google Play, and there's also an iOS version available. I tested Asphalt 7: Heat on a stock, freshly-formatted Samsung Galaxy S III running Android 4.0. There are 60 different cars you can drive on 15 tracks, set in various cities such as London, Paris, and Rio. You start off with a Fiat 500 Abarth. Gradually, you move up the line to a BMW Z4 M Coupe, a Nissan 370Z, and later, Aston Martins and Lamborghinis, unlocking more cars and upgrading them as you go along. The latest update includes the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo and the refreshed 2013 Hyundai Genesis.

Cars are separated into six different tiers based on their performance characteristics; each event you race in is limited to a single tier. You can also customize the paint, decals, and window tint of each car, as well as upgrade its performance with virtual money you win as you play. But upgrades aren't always worth it; increasing top speed by just 2 km/h cost $18,000, which is ridiculous. Sometimes you get a free car just for one event; I was thrilled to take the wheel of an Audi TT after driving the Fiat, and moving to the second tier starts you off with a fast BMW 1 Series M Coupe.

Knock 'Em Down and Take 'Em Out
You steer your car by tilting the handset right or left, and the car accelerates automatically. Tap toward the left side of the screen, and it will light up a brake pedal icon and slow the car. The right side of the screen is the nitro boost area; tap it for a seven-second overboost. Do it with a full boost gauge, and the screen turns blue with neon blue accents, and you hear a prominent whoosh sound as you charge forward. You can also drift by braking and tilting the handset at the same time, which is fun, although it slows you down considerably.

There are 15 leagues and 150 races to complete. You also get a series of goals ahead of each event, such as completing three career events, earning three stars in any one event, and collecting 10 dollar pick-ups. As you complete goals, new ones appear, such as drifting a certain total distance during an event, wrecking less often, or "knocking down" a certain number of opponents by causing them to crash. Meanwhile, power ups are strewn throughout the course. Some of them add to your nitro boost, while others give you prize money. ?Push it too hard?say, crash into an oncoming car head-on, or hit a building?and you'll wreck, although aside from wasting a few seconds, it doesn't have much effect on the game itself.

The computer-controlled AI offers a moderate level of difficulty, and a new multiplayer mode lets you race with up to five friends, either online or locally. Overall, there's a nice sense of accomplishment as you move through the various events. And between the races, time-trials, and position elimination modes, there's enough variety to keep you engaged.

Stellar Visuals?With One Problem
Asphalt 7: Heat is one of the most impressive-looking racers I've seen on a phone. The 30-second-ish intros at the beginning of each event deliver a nice feel for the city you're about to race in; you can also abort these sequences and skip right to the countdown. On the road, there's plenty of detail in the dense urban environments, including nicely textured pavement, building structures, and sun glare, and the car models are all easily recognizable.

Draw-in distances are sometimes a little short. But worse is the uneven frame rate, which becomes more common during races with computer-controlled opponents. Usually, the game delivered 30 frames per second and above. But I caught many short periods of less than that, and even split-second hang-ups that were just long enough to be noticeable and irritating. I also saw a few bugs; on one course, some drone cars disappeared as I approached them, although most events worked perfectly.

The soundtrack is somewhat characterless electronic techno, with a steady, pulsing beat and no vocals. It's well-produced, at times sounding Daft Punk-esque. Sound design is pretty thorough as well. Each car has a distinct engine note; the BMW 1 Series M Coupe had a smooth, throaty, high-RPM bark appropriate for a twin-turbo straight six, while the Fiat 500 Abarth belched and rasped at high RPMs, and the Audi TT surged with its quiet, refined turbo four. All the standard skid-out, collision crunches, and power-up sounds are present and accounted for.

55 MPH Is No Fun?Unless You're Still In First Gear
There's very little here that's new. But even so, Asphalt 7: Heat delivers plenty of racing excitement. If you can ignore occasional interruptions in the frame rate, the game delivers an awesome sense of speed; it's tough not to feel the adrenaline rush as you play. It feels closer to that of a triple-A console title than it does a throwaway game?and a good one, too. That's an easy marker for an Editors' Choice award if you ask us.
