Schmidt Talks North Korea on Google+
Google chairman Eric Schmidt took to Google+ to discuss his recent trip to North Korea. Schmidt's post discusses the "very limited" technology available in North Korea. Schmidt said that North Koreans are not allowed to use the Internet without someone watching them, and that it wouldn't be difficult for North Korea to connect its highly restricted networks to the World Wide Web.

PayLane Brings Its Startup-Friendly Online Payments To Germany ...
PayLane, the European online payments company, is expanding to Germany ? it already operates in Poland, UK, and Ireland ? accepting payments in 160 currencies from over 50 countries. But where the Polish company tries to stand out from the crowd is with its focus on the idiosyncratic nature of each local European market by supporting a number of alternative payment methods. Along with credit card and PayPal processing, PayLane supports things like Sofortbanking in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, wire transfers in Poland, Dankort in Denmark, Carte Bleue in France or iDEAL in the Netherlands. It also claims to be particularly startup-friendly with a dedicated offering for companies who have no processing history and might be denied by other providers.
In addition to the list of supported currencies and countries from which payments can be accepted and processed, PayLane provides plugins for popular e-commerce platforms such as Magento, OpenCart, osCommerce, Zen Cart, PrestaShop, or even WordPress. It also supports single-click (i.e. credit card details stored) and recurring payments, which is useful for companies with subscription-based business models.
As for its startup-friendly touted credentials, in addition to helping newly-founded businesses get their first foot on the online payments ladder, including helping them set up Merchant Accounts, PayLane has launched DevZone ? a dedicated area of its site for developers that delves into the technical side of how to integrate its online payments solution, including sample code in PHP, Java, C#, Ruby, Python and cURL, along with detailed instructions, business cases and demos of transactions.
The company has an interesting background. Entirely self-funded, PayLane was founded way back in 2005 by Simon Grabowski (the CEO of GetResponse and ClickMeeting), but for the first 5 years existed almost entirely to support its sister companies, operating without customer service and marketing activities. It wasn?t really until 2011 that PayLane began to offer its online payment services to other companies. Today, its clients include names such as GetResponse, ClickMeeting, Survs, Esponce, and Nozbe.
That said, PayLane faces plenty of European competition, such as Sagepay, Ogone, and Worldpay. Meanwhile, U.S. and heavily-backed Braintree recently begun targeting this side of the pond.

U.S. gives tribute to memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
ATLANTA (Reuters) - America's concern over gun violence became the focus of speeches in Atlanta on Monday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who led a non-violent struggle for civil rights before he was gunned down at age 39.
Crowds gathered at commemorative services across the country on the national holiday in King's honor, the same day as President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremonies and little more than a month after the Connecticut mass shooting that touched off a national outcry over gun control.
In a ceremony in King's hometown of Atlanta, his daughter Bernice King spoke at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was once a pastor. She recalled her father's reaction after their family home in Montgomery, Alabama, was bombed in 1956 during a boycott of the local bus system.
Some black residents of the city were "armed that day, ready to protect their homes," but King urged them to put away their guns, Bernice King said.
"This apostle of nonviolence perhaps introduced one of the greatest experiences of gun control that we've ever heard of in the history of our nation," said Bernice King, who is chief executive of the King Center in Atlanta.
An assassin's bullet ended King's life on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, human rights activist Elisabeth Omilami reminded the crowd at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
"Dr. King was a victim of gun violence," said Omilami, daughter of Hosea Williams, one of King's lieutenants in the civil rights movement.
The church crowd gathered before a giant screen to witness the inauguration ceremony in Washington and hear Obama's speech which touched on King's "I Have a Dream" speech delivered 50 years ago in Washington.
Obama last week proposed a package of measures intended to reduce gun violence following the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting that killed 20 first grade students and six staff members.
In his speech on Monday, Obama recalled King's dream for freedom for all Americans, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or geographic or economic status.
"Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm," said Obama, who used a Bible that belonged to King at his swearing-in ceremony.
King's father, Reverend Martin Luther King Sr., also was a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church. It sits on Atlanta's historic Auburn Avenue near the King Center, established in 1968 by the slain activist's widow Coretta Scott King, who died in 2006. On the avenue not far from the church is King's grandparents' home, where he was born in 1929.
King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Nearly a million people visit the King Center each year, viewing an eternal flame honoring King and crypts holding the remains of King and his wife and attending an array of programs promoting non-violent social change.
Around the country, where Martin Luther King Day has been a federal holiday since 1986, banks, financial markets and government offices were closed.
A march along Auburn Avenue was set for later in the day, and a rally to address such issues as education, housing, peace, justice and voter registration, organizers said.
Also planned was a Day of Service, with an array of community service projects in Atlanta in honor of King.

Farrokh Ayazi Named 2013 IEEE Fellow ? Industry Relations
Farrokh Ayazi, a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is among the 298 individuals worldwide named a 2013 IEEE Fellow. Dr. Ayazi is being recognized for contributions to micro-electro-mechanical resonators and resonant gyroscopes.
A vast majority of microsystems used in computers and mobile phones rely on accurate timing signals that are generated by microresonators. Gyroscopes, a class of inertial sensors, are resonant microdevices used in gaming devices, navigation, health care, and robotics for motion and position processing. They also provide image stabilization in cameras and electronic stability control in cars.
The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. It is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
A faculty member in ECE since 2000, Dr. Ayazi leads the Integrated MEMS Laboratory and is the director of the Georgia Tech Center for MEMS and Microsystems Technologies (CMMT). In 2008, he co-founded and became the CTO of Qualtr?, a spinout company of his research lab that develops gyroscopes and motion sensors that power today?s consumer electronics and personal navigation systems. To date, Dr. Ayazi has attracted more than $23 million from the private sector to commercialize his research ideas. Another of his resonator technologies and its associated patent portfolio was licensed to Integrated Device Technology, and the first product offering based on this technology, CrystalFreeTM pMEMSTM Oscillators, was announced by IDT earlier this year.
Dr. Ayazi was recently named editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices and has been the editor of the IEEE/ASME Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems since 2005. He serves on technical program committees for the top workshops and conferences in his field and is the general co-chair for the 2014 IEEE Micro-Electro-Mechanical (MEMS) Conference, to be held in San Francisco. The author of over 200 refereed journal and conference papers, Dr. Ayazi and his students have received several best conference paper awards. He is a past recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and has received the Outstanding Junior Faculty Member Award and the Richard M. Bass/Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Teacher Award from the School of ECE. Dr. Ayazi holds 30 US patents. He received his bachelor?s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran in 1994 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1997 and 2000, respectively, from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
