Washington Nationals: Harper, Desmond, Span homer; Nats beat Mets 4-1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper, Ian Desmond and Denard Span all homered, powering the Washington Nationals to a 4-1 win over the New York Mets on Saturday.

Dan Haren (5-11) pitched seven innings for his first win since May 9, allowing one run and three hits.

Desmond and Span hit back-to-back homers against Dillon Gee (7-8) in the second inning and Harper followed with a two-run drive in the third.

Harper returned to the starting lineup after being limited to pinch-hitting duty in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. The All-Star outfielder aggravated his left knee while diving for a ball in the opener.

After Haren's leadoff double in the third, Harper hit his 15th home run of the year.

Despite a tumultuous week, which included the Nationals firing their hitting coach and demoting former closer Drew Storen to the minors, Washington has won three of four games after dropping six straight following the All-Star break.

David Wright had two singles and an RBI for the Mets, who have lost two straight, scoring a combined two runs after winning Friday's doubleheader opener 11-0.

The game was delayed by rain for 62 minutes with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Only scattered fans from the original crowd of 37,464 returned to watch the final five outs.

Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

In his longest start since May 30, Haren walked one and struck out six. Haren's winless drought wasn't a case of bad luck but primarily poor pitching.

In between victories, the veteran right-hander made 11 starts, going 0-8 with a 6.18 ERA. Even worse, Washington lost all 11 games, including three since Haren returned from the disabled list on July 8.

With Eric Young Jr. on second following a single and stolen base in the sixth, Wright's two-out single ended Haren's shutout hopes.

Haren and the Nationals bullpen held New York to one hit over the final three innings. Reliever Tyler Clippard pitched a spotless eighth.

Gee had not lost since June 17 and did allow an earned run in his preceding two starts. He dominated the Nationals in three previous starts this season, posting a 3-0 record with an 0.96 ERA.

Gee pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

Span hit his first home run with the Nationals and first for the former Minnesota outfielder since Oct. 2, 2012, a span of 426 plate appearances.

NOTES: Minus the delay, the game took 2 hours, 17 minutes. ... Washington has seven sets of back-to-back home runs this season. ... The Mets are moving to a six-man pitching rotation in an attempt to limit the number of innings pitched by starters Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler. Following Gee and Carlos Torres in Washington, Jeremy Hefner pitches Monday at Miami followed by Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia and Harvey. ... Torres (1-1, 0.94) opposes Washington's RHP Taylor Jordan (0-3, 3.68) in Sunday's series finale.

PS4 development kits cost about $2,500, but Sony is loaning many out for free

July 25th, 2013 Posted in General Sony, News, PS3, PS4, Xbox One Posted By: Austin

It?s no surprise to anyone that Sony is being extremely proactive in trying to secure developers for PS4 after the early-years-of-PS3 debacle where no one seemed to care about developing for it, and one of the ways they seem to be accomplishing that is by lending out PS4 development kits to ?favored developers? for free. A Sony spokesperson said that they?re attempting to be extremely flexible with indies, and one indie developer said ?they are handing them out like candy?.

But if you can?t get one on loan, how much should you expect to pay for a PS4 dev kit? Roughly $2,500, according to sources. That?s about $2,000 more than an Xbox One dev kit, and although Microsoft has a fee you have to pay to them in addition to that cost, it still comes in well below $1,000.

PS3 dev kits ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 last gen.

MechWarrior Online mech benefits cancer research
MechWarrior Online has a new premium mech available for download, and rather than touting its movement speed or the number of lasers mounted to its side, developer Piranha Games wants everyone to know about its greater purpose: cancer research.

"Sarah's Jenner" is a limited edition JR7-D variant, built in honor of five-year-old MechWarrior Sarah Marie Alida Parries, who passed from inoperable brain cancer last May. The mech is available for $10, with 100 percent of proceeds earned donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Players with a fully-stocked MechBay won't have to worry about buying more garage space, as Sarah's Jenner will come with its own private housing when implemented on August 23.

MechWarriors who wish to donate more than $10 are encouraged to send their monetary overflow to any of the charities listed on the promotion's FAQ.

[Thanks, Chris!]

Campaign Cuts Prostate Cancer Imaging (CME/CE)

Published: Jul 23, 2013

Reviewed?by?Robert Jasmer, MD; Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco

Initiatives aimed at discouraging clinicians from performing inappropriate imaging in men with early-stage, low-risk prostate cancers can dramatically lower testing rates, a study in Sweden found.

Imaging rates among the Swedish men with very low-risk prostate cancers plummeted from 45% to 3% (P<0.001) in the decade after the initiation of a campaign which allowed urologists to compare image testing at their institution with nearby centers -- essentially outing those who imaged large numbers of low-risk patients, according to a study by Par Stattin, MD, PhD, of Umea; University in Umea, Sweden, and colleagues, published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Seeing their own institution's imaging rate compared with others in public provided an incentive to reduce unwarranted testing, said study co-author Danil V. Makarov, MD, of NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.

"I think you could consider the tactic a way of gentle shaming of the healthcare providers who did not follow the guidelines," Makarov said.

The routine use of bone scans and axial imaging of the abdomen and pelvis in low-risk patients has been discouraged by many professional groups, including the American Urological Association, because these patients have a very low risk for disease progression. But rates of inappropriate imaging are still high in many parts of the U.S. and in other countries.

Low-risk prostate cancers are generally defined as stage T1 to T2 disease with a Gleason score of 6 or less and a PSA of less than 10 ng/mL to 20 mg/mL.

In a study published last year in the Journal of Urology, Makarov and colleagues found large regional differences in the rate of appropriate and inappropriate prostate cancer imaging across the U.S.

New Jersey was among the states with the highest rates of inappropriate imaging, with 62% of low-risk patients being imaged. Utah was among the states with the lowest rates, with 22% of low-risk patients imaged.

But New Jersey also had one of the highest rates of appropriate imaging of men with more advanced or more aggressive cancers, and Utah was among the states with the lowest rates of appropriate imaging.

"The finding suggests that imaging is really part of the culture of how patients are taken care of in a given region," Makarov told MedPage Today. "The decision to image seems to be less about how aggressive the cancer is than about where a patient lives."

The new retrospective, cohort study, done in collaboration with researchers from Sweden's Umea University, Uppsala University Hospital and Karolinska Institute, involved data from 100,000 Swedish men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1998 and 2009.

In 2000, a nationwide campaign was begun in Sweden with the aim of convincing urologists to stop imaging low-risk prostate cancer patients. At regional urology meetings, officials presented statistics on appropriate and inappropriate imaging, along with reminders about imaging guidelines.

A total of 36% of the men included in the study underwent imaging within 6 months of their prostate cancer diagnosis.

The study revealed that imaging use decreased over time in all regions of the country and among both low-risk and high-risk patients.

In high-risk patients, rates of appropriate imaging during the study period decreased from 63% to 47% (P<0.001), the researchers found. The finding suggested that efforts to limit inappropriate imaging may have the unintended consequence of negatively impacting appropriate imaging rates, Makarov said.

"We can't just say 'Don't image one group of patients' and leave it at that," he said. "We also have to encourage appropriate imaging where it is warranted."

Makarov added that the Swedish experience proves that initiatives designed to lower rates of unnecessary medical testing and treatment, such as the American Board of Internal Medicine's Choosing Wisely campaign in the U.S., can have an impact.

Choosing Wisely was launched in 1999 with the aim of promoting a dialogue between patients and their physicians about the best use of diagnostic tests and treatments.

Makarov said such initiatives will become increasingly relevant as the focus of health policymakers shifts from expanding access to medical services to bringing down skyrocketing costs.

"The Affordable Care Act doesn't really address costs directly," he said. "It does increase access to care, so we have loaded the boat and we are all in it together. We need to come up with better ways to bring down costs or we are going to be in big trouble."

The research was supported by the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Foundation, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Louis Feil Charitable Lead Trust.

Makarov disclosed funding from the Manhattan VA. No other authors reported any conflicts of interest.

Rebels picked to finish fifth in new football division

Image

Sam Morris

UNLV head football coach Bobby Hauck takes part in the Mountain West Conference football media day Tuesday, July 24,?2012.

League expectations for UNLV football are, once again, low. The Rebels were picked to finish fifth out of six teams in the new West division and had no players picked to the All-Mountain West team, which was revealed Monday morning.

Fresno State was picked to win the West division, led by preseason Offensive Player of the Year Derek Carr and Defensive Player of the Year Derron Smith, while Boise State was pegged atop the Mountain division.

With 12 teams, the Mountain West for the first time this year will play a football championship game between the two division champs. It will be played at the home of the team ranked higher in the BCS standings.

UNLV doesn?t figure to be part of that this season, but according to the Las Vegas Hilton, there could be a few more wins on the schedule. The sports book recently revealed some season over/unders and listed UNLV at 3.5 with the over costing minus-145. That suggests they have the Rebels pegged at four wins, which would equal the amount coach Bobby Hauck has won over the past two seasons.

The Rebels and the other 11 teams will be at the Cosmopolitan over the next two days for the league?s media days. Below is the predicted order of finish:

Mountain: Boise State, Utah State, Air Force, Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico

West: Fresno State, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNR, UNLV, Hawaii

Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas dares to be different. From the hotel?s red reservations desks to fine art found throughout the resort, The Cosmopolitan?s signature style is helping to pave its own path on the Las Vegas Strip.

Upon entering the resort, you?re greeted by pillars of video boards playing video art by Digital Kitchen and David Rockwell Studio exclusively produced for The Cosmopolitan. Just beyond that, you?ll find all your favorite casino games on the resort?s 100,000-square-foot casino floor.

The Cosmopolitan?s rooms standout as the resort?s most unique feature. About 2,220 of The Cosmopolitan?s 2,995 rooms have 6-foot deep terraces that span the length of the room, a first at a modern Strip hotel. Other in-room amenities include soaking tubs, kitchenettes and quirky accessories like artsy coffee table books.

The dining experience at The Cosmopolitan isn?t something you?ll find at other Strip resorts, either. All of The Cosmopolitan?s 13 restaurateurs are new to the Las Vegas market. You?ll find American steakhouse fare in a modern setting at STK, top-notch sushi at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill and the freshest fish flown in from the Mediterranean daily at Estiatorio Milos.

Whether the sun is up or down, Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub is the place to find the party at The Cosmopolitan. The venue is a dayclub/nightclub, complete with a pool and cabanas outside and three different rooms with three different vibes inside.

If nightclubs aren?t your thing, you can grab a drink at one of The Cosmopolitan?s five other bars, like The Chandelier, which is encased in 2 million dripping crystals.

Norway honors victims of 2011 terror attacks

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on Monday marked the second anniversary of the terror acts that killed 77 people by calling for a continued fight against all forms of extremism.

In a wreath-laying ceremony at the government headquarters, Stoltenberg said society has to stand up against "populist right-wing parties" that are on the rise in Europe, and extremist Islamists who continue to send out threats.

"No extremist shall scare us from moving freely, thinking freely or speaking freely," Stoltenberg said. "Our values are our strongest weapon and our strongest protection against violence and terror."

Far-right fanatic Anders Behring Breivik has confessed to the July 22, 2011, attacks in which he killed eight people in a bombing at the government headquarters and 69 others in a shooting spree at the left-wing Labor Party's youth camp on Utoya island.

In 2012, he received a 21-year prison sentence that can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous to society. Legal experts say that likely means he will be locked up for life.

Later Monday, an emotional ceremony was held on the shores opposite Utoya island.

"Today our thoughts are especially with all parents, siblings, partners and families who lost what was dearest to them," said Eskil Pedersen, the head of the Labor Party's youth chapter and a survivor of the massacre.

He said many survivors and relatives are still struggling with their daily lives.

"There are still many who are burdened with grief, who struggle to concentrate in school or at work, who see that Norway has moved on, but who don't feel they have the power to do the same," he said. "My hope is that this community has room for everyone who was marked for life on July 22. Let us be there for each other, even if July 22 is no longer talked about on a daily basis."
